Art 2 Final Exam

Final Blog

1.    I feel that my most successful project was the clay project, where we had to make realistic food items. I had my idea pretty early on about making chicken legs and a biscuit. However, I ended up changing the biscuit a few times, first to a pie and then to a Bo-Berry biscuit. I was not pleased with how the biscuit and pie looked.  I felt that they turned out very well for using a material I have only used one other time. When making this object out of clay I needed to hollow it out so it would not explode in the kiln. I forgot to do this initially, and found it very difficult to hollow it out later on and still keep the shape how I wanted it. Another challenge was shading the chicken so it would look dimensional.  To do this I highlighted in some parts and darkened in others.

2.    I think my least successful project was my mixed media project. This project was especially difficult because I had never done this style before. My idea was to make a sort of monster comprised of different wild animal parts. The first mistake I made was using tissue paper to make a "foresty" background. The tissue paper bled terribly and messed up the actual pictures I put down. The next thing I did was place the pictures of animal parts. As I said, the tissue paper bled a lot and stained the pictures green and brown. To make this project better I could have used regular glue to put down the tissue paper instead of using gesso which caused the bleeding. I could have also added arms to the monster to make it look more realistic.

3.    Two projects that show my growth would be my perspective project and my artists style project. The perspective project depicts a castle wall.  It has good shading, but the colors are not very well done. The grass in this project was not my best, but I learned I needed to blend the colors better.  The artists style project showed better color composition, and the tree shows how I improved in blending colors to make things look more realistic. Another thing I think I have improved on in the artists style project is line work. In the perspective project it looks messy and all over the place. In the artists style project it all looks cleaner and the lines and brush strokes are going in the same way in each object. In the perspective project I used colored pencils/pencil, and in the artist style project I used acrylics. I learned that I am better at using pencil for outlining rather than completing the project in it.  In the artists style I learned how to personalize my work which makes it easier to reach my goal. I had no connection to the perspective project and found it more frustrating.

4.    I think that one mini-assignment that was beneficial to my learning was the skeleton drawing. This was a drawing of a life size skeleton model in class. This helped me learn about proportion and how important it is, especially when drawing a person or animal. I believe I had enough instruction to succeed since I have sketched with pencil many times before.  Another mini-assignment that I thought was beneficial to my learning was the room perspective drawing. This was a pencil/pen drawing of the art room in perspective, but we could not lift our pen/pencil throughout the entire process. This was very difficult because all the drawing I do is lots of little lines not one giant one. Getting practice with drawing a room helped me learn perspective and helped me complete my perspective project easier.  I would have liked more instruction on this assignment to help me understand how to get more detail without lifting your pen/pencil and being able to start again.

5.    My favorite medium to work with is just plain pencil. Most of the drawings I've done before Art 2 were in pencil. You can always have a pencil and paper with you wherever you go.  Few materials are needed, and it is a not messy medium.  I have the most practice with pencil drawings. I enjoy just sketching random ideas from my head or something that's in the room I'm in. Many of my earliest pencil drawings were animals, real or imagined.  Sketching with pencil has always been a stress relieving activity for me.  I wish we could do more of it in art class.
